Simon Sinek’s book “Start With Why” is one of the best books I have read about business and leadership. I recommend this book to everyone who wants to start or already runs a business. As the owner of two businesses, those thinking about starting a business often ask, “where do I start? I have no idea where to begin.” Entrepreneurship can be very scary, confusing, and daunting. One of the keys is, to begin with, why—understanding your why is the first step in the journey.
I didn’t start and continue to operate my cleaning business because it’s my passion to clean. I have met a few people in the industry who love to clean, but it is rare, and I sometimes question their sanity! 😊 The cleaning business works for my family and me because it allows me to have a reasonably flexible schedule and pays better than a traditional part-time job in sectors like retail or hospitality. These factors were significant in my role as an at-home father. While the work is physical, the benefits outweigh the negatives.
I started this coaching business for several reasons. My strengths are used best as a teacher, helping people understand the often confusing and frustrating world of money. I worked for a time in the financial services industry, selling insurance and investment products. While I enjoyed working with people on their financial situations and goals, I didn’t enjoy the sales and quotas aspect of that industry. This new venture allows me to help individuals, couples, and business owners take control of their financial future with fee-based coaching with no sales goals or quotas. I have worked as a Teacher/Naturalist at the Pioneers Park Nature Center for over ten years and have learned a great deal about teaching complex subjects to people in small or large groups. Sole proprietorship allows me to control the values and priorities of my company. I also see this venture as something I can do well into my later years, unlike the cleaning business, which has physical limitations as I get older.
While I may use the 80/20 rule as a general term, I understand the importance of dealing with each situation on its own merits. This is why the bread and butter of FiscalDad Coaching is person-to-person individual coaching.
